Did You Know…
Researchers in Leipzig discovered through the use of brain scans that musicians had larger planum temporale, the region of the brain associated with reading skills. Also, musicians had a thicker corpus callosum, the nerve fibers that connect the two halves of the brain. (Source: G. Schlaug, L. Jancke, Y. Huang, and H. Steinmetz (1994). “In vivo morphometry of interhemispheric asymmetry and connectivity in musicians.” In I. Deliege (Ed.), Proceedings of the 3rd international conference for music perception and cognition (pp. 417-418), Liege, Belgium. )
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is our top performing group. To gain membership, students must audition twice a year, once at the end of the spring semester for membership and again in August for chair placement. There is a third audition in January for those students who wish to move up in their chair placement. The Symphonic Band Performs at all special functions that the band department is enlisted to perform at. This group attends various competitions throughout the school year. Members are expected to maintain not only passing grades and good conduct, but exhibit a level of achievement that represents the the goals of all other members in the organization. Members will be expected to participate in solo and ensemble competitions.
Concert Band
This group is our second performing group. They will perform during the winter and spring concerts as well as attend some competitions. As all members of the band organization are important, they also will be held to a high standard of achievement, but with a less rigorous performance schedule. Auditions for this group will also be held at the end of the spring semester for membership and again in August for chair placement.
Beginner Bands
The beginning band program consist of classes divided by their family of instruments: woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The focus of these groups is to develop a strong foundation in performance and music literacy so they may move with strength and security to the concert and Symphonic Band level. No prior experience is necessary. There is no audition process, but students will have to go through an assessment with the band department's faculty to assure the correct instrument is assigned. Space is limited on each instrument to ensure balance of future ensembles.
Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble will be returning to Revere this year! This ensemble meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 7:30 to 8:30. Membership is gained through audition and is open to all students enrolled in a band class during the school day. This instrumentation consist of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, guitars, bass guitars, drums, and piano. Auditions occur twice a year during August and January; however, students participating during the fall semester will have an advantage due to a full semester of rehearsal. The Jazz Ensemble will perform at school and community functions and compete in local area jazz festivals.
Pep Band
The Patriot Pep Band will play at the school's sporting events and pep rallies. The membership of this ensemble comes from the symphonic band and concert bands. Beginners that are able to play the music are allowed on a performance-by-performance basis. Music will be rehearsed during class with occasional after school rehearsals. There is no audition and space is unlimited.
